Artist Statement:
Memory has always played a key role in my work- I am interested in capturing small moments in everyday life that gain importance with time. My work is often layered, buried images and embedded materials building up to create a two dimensional plane. I am attempting to connect my memories with those of others, small moments often forgotten. I collect photographs and postcards and allow their imagery to find its way into my compositions, combining these images with my own to find somewhere that may exist, somewhere, maybe. I am captivated by the unknown and the misremembered. Themes I tend to explore relate to time, religion, the psychological landscape(i.e. projections of the subconscious and conscious mind on the world around us), ritual, and the uncanny. I'm interested in the things we bury, small everyday traumas and successes, real or imagined. This body of work in particular relates to my experiences before and after having my son, and the way my time as a mother has changed my views of the world we are living in.
Bio:
Allison Hall is a mixed media artist and educator living and working in Cleveland, Ohio. Hall earned her BFA in Painting and Literary Studies from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2014, spending one semester abroad at the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughan, Ireland. Her pieces are heavily influenced by current events, images seen while in motion, literature, found images, and familial structure. Hall works primarily with oil and collage elements, as well as graphite, water color, gouache, and charcoal. Her work has been featured in numerous group shows and exhibitions, the most recent being "Relief Conspiracy: Print Exhibition 2020-21", at The Harlow Gallery in Hallowell, Maine. Hall teaches various classes and workshops at the Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood, Ohio, and Firelands Association for the Visual Arts(FAVA) in Oberlin, Ohio. She is currently focusing on expanding her creative practice at home with her husband and two year old son Archie.
